Lt JL Ochiltree was appointed to the Goldfields Battalion of Infantry, a newly formed volunteer unit based in Kalgoorlie and surrounding areas, on 17th July1900. He subsequently enlisted for service in the South African War with 5th Contingent, Western Australian Mounted Infantry (5WAMI) which departed on 6th March 1901. The 5th WAMI saw service in the Eastern Transvaal, Natal and Orange Free State, returning home in April 1902.
