Introduction

Welcome to the Army Museum of Western Australia's website.

Our Mission:

"To collect, conserve, and exhibit the history of the Army in Western Australia, and Western Australians in the Army".

The Army Museum of Western Australia (AMWA) is a regional museum within the Australian Army History Unit (AAHU) network. The museum is supported by the Army Museum of Western Australia Foundation (AMWAF) which provides the volunteers and support funding that enables the museum to operate.

Australian Army History Unit is a direct command unit of Army Headquarters (AHQ), under control, for administration purposes, of the Chief of Staff AHQ.

The museum is located in the historic Artillery Barracks that were established in Fremantle in 1910.  This is a 'step on the Heritage Trail' from Perth and can be considered to be a part of the Fremantle experience.

Temporary Closure of Second World War Gallery

As part of the museum's upgrade and redevelopment of its Second World War displays, the current Second World War gallery will be temporarily closed as from 1 December 2011. (Note: the POW Gallery will remain open).

We regret any inconvenience to visitors, but work on the development of the museum's new Second World War Gallery and the integration of various items on current display into this new environment necessitates this closure.

It is anticipated that this larger and enhanced Second World War gallery, located on the first floor of the main building, will be open to the public in July 2012.
